Abstract The velocity profiles of propellant gas in chemically energized projectiles are modeled using the Lagrange gradient result from fluid dynamics. The side conditions employed in this process do not include the effect of changing burning surface of the solid or liquid propellant. We propose a generalized model which incorporates this factor and which is analytically amenable. A comparison is drawn with results obtained using existing methods which indicate lower energy transfer than observed.
